Introduction

The climate industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with AI technologies emerging as critical tools for environmental challenges. Yet this dynamic landscape remains difficult to navigate, as traditional market categorizations fail to capture the complex relationships between diverse startups. Comprehensive visibility into these connections has become essential for making informed investment decisions.

We partnered with Climactic to create an interactive visualization of the climate AI market. Building on the success of their previous static map, this project aimed to position them as an authority in the climate AI space while providing deeper market insights. Standard market maps organize companies into rigid categories, making it difficult to see cross-sector relationships. Our approach instead visualizes connections across capabilities, sectors, and regions simultaneously.

Design Approach

The visualization maps 200+ companies in the climate AI space through an interface that enables exploration across multiple dimensions. Users can filter by capability areas (like monitoring, modeling, or robotics), sectors (such as agriculture or energy), geographic regions, and funding stages. This approach reveals patterns in how AI technologies are being applied to climate challenges and helps identify gaps or concentrations in the market.

Designed for direct tablet interaction, the interface feels incredibly fun to rip around in.

Value Created

The visualization serves the climate tech community as both a reference tool and discovery platform. Investors can track patterns across companies to identify promising technologies. Entrepreneurs can understand competitive positioning and spot potential market gaps (such as underserved intersections between capabilities and sectors). Researchers can examine how AI technologies are being applied across climate sectors.

Working within Climactic's existing technology stack (Webflow with JavaScript and Airtable integration), we designed a solution that was both visually sophisticated and technically feasible for rapid implementation. The system allows users to create custom views of the market and share them directly to social platforms, facilitating data-driven conversations about the climate AI landscape.
